Post 15: What I Gained From ENGL1101A

To start I would like to tell you that it has been many years since I graduated high school. On top of that this is my first semester of college ever. So, it is safe to say that I felt like I was starting over all over again. The levels of anxiety and fear that overcame me when I started this class were tremendous. I am not ashamed to admit that I struggled at first. Although I struggled there were many things throughout this course that helped me succeed.

One of those things being that my professor took the time to communicate with the class by participating in the blog posts with us. This gave us examples of how we were expected to do things and the proper way. I would have to say one of the biggest things though would be that with our essays it was not just a one-time shot, and you were done. Not the “typical” the grade you got was just what you got that I had been accustomed to. I appreciated this because it gave us the chance to learn from our mistakes and want to truly fix them. To push ourselves to better written essay to an eventual better grade.

So even though I struggled in the beginning what I can say now is that with time and the way this class was set up, I was able to overcome that tremendous level of anxiety and fear that I started this course with. I went from dreading this semester to in the end enjoying this class. I mean I learned and accomplished many things throughout this one class that I never expected myself to do. Such as this blogging. Now I can take that knowledge with myself throughout the rest of my college journey and beyond. I look forward to seeing what the future brings.

  1. What a wonderful post. I'm so pleased that the class worked for you, as it doesn't work for everyone. I agree that you have advanced as a writer, and the skills that you have learned and earned over the past 15 weeks will work for you. Well done.

  2. I agree! My first four weeks were hard for me due to work and school. I wanted to give up, but this class showed me how to blog and correct my writing. I sent off emails daily, and I needed help. Happy we all can walk away with more confidence.

  3. Another point I didn't touch on! The essay grade not being a one-and-done really is a great way to actually TEACH! I learned a lot more by being given advice and seeing where I went wrong and fixing it than simply being told I've failed and have no recourse or chance or learning from that failure!

Post 10: Does the professional nursing blog fit the blog genre?

We see in the article Navigating Genres by Kerry Dirk the statement of "Let’s consider a genre with which you are surely familiar: the thesis statement." So, to start let us identify if there even is a thesis statement of the professional blog article post. If so, what is the thesis statement? We in the blog post by Sarah Cruzan "It would be nearly impossible to write about the many things I do during my 12-hour shift, but I will try to describe a typical day as a postpartum nurse:" Clearly the blog post does have a thesis statement. It explicitly states that she will be describing a typical day as a postpartum nurse. We also see in the article from Dirk "When approaching a genre for the first time, you likely view it as more than a simple form: “Picking up a text, readers not only classify it and expect a certain form, but also make assumptions about the text’s purposes, its subject matter, its writer, and its expected reader” (Devitt, Writing 12). With the bl...

Post 3:Rosenberg's Strategies for Reading Scholarly Sources

When reading Rosenberg's essay " Reading Games: Strategies for Reading Scholarly Sources" the section "The introduction" is something that I understand and go by. As a reader I was always one to just skim through the introductions and not pay much attention to them. I did not utterly understand the importance of it. Rosenberg states "If the author is doing her/his job well, the introduction will not only summarize the whole piece, present the main idea, and tell us why we should care, but it will also often offer a road map for the rest of the article." (p. 216) The introduction is something that sets the essays up and will give you what you need to understand whatever it may be your reading. The introduction is used to set the tone to the essay. The section in which Rosenberg discusses the title is something that I can use to learn from. Rosenberg states "The title. As obvious as it sounds, pay attention to the title because it can convey a lot...

Post 06: Analyzing The Primary Audience for Academic Paper

In the article Colorado State University's Writing Guide, it is said "Remember: Analyze your audience BEFORE you start writing, so you'll know what format, style, vocabulary, or level of information is expected." So, I know how important it is that I analyze my college teacher that is the primary audience for my academic paper before I begin writing. The Colorado State University's Writing guide informs us that "Once they know who their audience is, they can mold their advertising--their words, format, graphics, images--to appeal to that specific audience." Knowing that my primary audience is my English college teacher I know exactly who is going to be reading the academic paper. I know that they work in the profession, specifically already knowing how one should write for an audience properly. Therefore, they would hold higher educational standards to be expected when the academic paper is presented to them. I know that I would need to use formal prop...
